According to a recent article in Publishers Weekly by Judith Rosen, book sales

As for the possibility of young adults reading demanding literature? Dim, very dim.6)? Rosetta Stone Bottom line about books is often profit and loss—if [hardcover and paperback] books are not selling, and downloadable eBooks seem to be selling, what is going to happen? As Jeff Bezos, the chief executive of Amazon noted recently, eBooks at Amazon now outsell hardcovers and paperbacks, nytimes/2011/05/20/technology/20amazon.html.According to a recent article in Publishers Weekly by Judith Rosen, book sales, based on an assessment by Abacus Books, declined in 2009 by 8.4 percent based on 61 percent of their respondents. Of the 39 percent whose purchases increased that year, they rose by only a meager 3.8 percent. Nor were these figures expected to improve for 2010 or 2011 (Reimagine Everything: New Bookstore Concepts Abound at BEA 2011 Steelers Jerseys ).I suppose the real question is whether tangible books will survive. I don’t know. Certainly, its not hard to imagine in the near future that most books will be eBooks and that if people read newspapers and magazines at all it will be either online or electronically.7)? Are librarians being prepared for what seems to be a shift or transition? At the University of Illinois, where I spend my academic year, our library has extensive holdings. I feel very fortunate to have it as a daily resource. Over the last few years the university library has focused more of its resources on expanding its electronic databases. What that means is that if I need a journal article or a Rosetta Stone Cheap newspaper, I can almost always access it through the online databases. Having that capability is wonderful—and essential—since scholars today need to be able to do research from almost anywhere. However since funding is not infinite, the downside is that getting a book from the university library or from the local libraries increasingly necessitates borrowing it from inter-library loan. How local libraries are adjusting in the transition from books to eBooks depends on the resources and the community. In the case of the Champaign Rosetta Stone American English V3 Public Library and The Urbana Free Library in Illinois, both situated in the backyard of the University of Illinois, the transition to eBooks is faster and more comprehensive than in many other libraries across the country.
